Seven months into her pregnancy with her fourth child, Joy Szabo's obstetrician gave her some news she didn't want to hear: Because she'd had a previous Caesarean section, the hospital where she planned to deliver was insisting she have another one. Szabo wanted a vaginal delivery, and argued with hospital executives, but they stood firm: They refused to do vaginal births after Caesareans (VBACs) because they have a slightly higher risk for complications. After they lost that fight, Szabo and her husband, Jeff, made an unusual decision. About three weeks before her due date, Szabo moved nearly six hours away from their home in Page, Arizona, to Phoenix to give birth at a hospital that does permit women to have VBACs. In the end, the Szabos got the birth they wanted. On December 5, their son Marcus Anthony was born in Phoenix via an uncomplicated vaginal delivery, weighing seven pounds and 13 ounces. 8:00 A ringing in my ear, eight in the morning and the buzzer is going off. My eyes crept open as I rolled over and smacked the clock. Quiet please. A faint glow edged through my window, the rays of light blanketed my face. The bright beast prowled into the room, pouncing and landing with all four paws on my chest. Time to wake up it said. The sun was blinding and painful as my vision tried to focus after spending time in the dark. I just wanted to roll over and go back to dreaming. After four years of college and all those damned early morning classes, you would think I would be use to this. The mornings in Tokyo are different though, from the ones at school. With a new found vision, I sat up and scanned the city. The still mornings brings some comfort to me, a wave of euphoric peace as it were. I am a lousy cleaner. I am a lousier packer. See, since i'm stuck at home for the next couple of days because of my operation, my mom insinuated that cleaning my room might help kill the boredom. ("Mom, i'm bored...") ("Can't you see i'm busy? Go clean your room lah!" says angry mom in Chinese) Sigh. Well i'm a terrible packer. As you probably already know, i'm not the neatest or most organised person around. In fact, my room table is piled high with worksheets (not filed, of course) books, scores, random receipts, pamphlets, drawings of the human heart, and other pieces of paper stacked into mountains lying there, waiting to be recycled. But it's IMPOSSIBLE TO THROW ANYTHING AWAY. Every stupid piece of paper in those 4 piles could be in some way vital to my future. Like, as much as i would like to burn all my notes and textbooks from this year, i CAN'T. What if i'm retained and must redo my Sec 4 year? And then i'd only be able to look back at the ashes of my beautiful Bio notes... (more)
